TODDLER EMOTIONS

55826925_2201902323458289_8101109653779251200_n.jpg

I recently offered words of solidarity and understanding to a relative who has a tiny baby and a two year old who’s been feeling the typical whirlwind of toddler emotions.

I’ve been there - and it’s tough. All of a sudden, while your navigating your 4th trimester with your second bub; your gorgeous little first born goes feral and you begin to question everything. While I found having a newborn the second time around was so much easier than the first time, the most difficult part of having a second baby is just how much your first child changes - particularly of they've just turned two.

It was around this time that I was introduced to doTERRA and it’s was honestly a godsend - I connected with a number of other mums in similar positions and was able to get some tips and tricks on how to cope with the wild toddler emotions.

Balance and Wild Orange was one diffuser blend that came highly recommended for toddlers and on so many occasions it help calm the farm - both for me and Farley. I would usually diffuse it in the mornings - particularly on days that we had a planned activity like playgroup and I found that getting dressed and organised and into the car to be a much more calmer experience for all involved.

Sometimes I would just take a few deep breaths of Balance straight from the bottle in times of crisis!

Definitely two oils I would recommend to mums of toddlers.

PRODUCTIVITY BLENDS

I’ve always been a night owl; I find it so hard to shut off my brain once I get into bed.

When I was a kid I would hide a torch under my pillow and stay up all night reading in bed by torch light.

During high school, I’d stay up late and put maximum effort into my assignments - I was a total nerd.

During uni, I would stay up even later, after getting home from my part time evening work to make sure all my assignments were on track and handed in on time. - Again - total nerd.

Once I entered the workforce, I found myself in a position with a pretty high work load (and very little monetary compensation ) and would again stay up til all hours of the night just to catch up on the days work. (I learn some very valuable life lessons the hard way with that job - but a story for another day)

Even when I was self employed, creating wedding videos, I did a lot of my work at night, even though I had the days completely free, just because I was so used to focusing and being productive at nights.

Becoming a mum has changed all this in may ways - I’ve learnt that you can’t wear yourself out too much when it comes to parenting a baby. In fact, when I had Farley, I figured I could still juggle my videography work with a baby - I’d just do all the work at night when she was asleep. But I was blessed with a baby who refused to sleep independently - again, another story for another day)

Now I value sleep a lot more highly than I used to but realistically as a mum who is at home with kids 90% of the time, if I do want to work from home, it’s got to be at nights. (thankfully both girls now do sleep independently)

I try to not do consecutive late nights on the computer in a row - just a few a week. But on the nights I do decided to stay up late and edit a video or create some content, I’ve been diffusing either of these two blends:

Lemon
Peppermint
Lavender

or

Lime
Spearmint
Citrus Bliss

It honestly makes such a different - productivity is at 100% and procrastination is at 0%. I feel awake and inspired and focused. Without the diffuser going I'd find myself scrolling social media or a news site or researching our next (make believe) overseas family holiday.

doTERRA do have a number of their own proprietary blends to support those times when you've just got to get sh*t done; like Motivate, InTune or Thinker (from the kids range) but I just love the aroma and effects of these two blends.

Let me know if you think essential oils could support your productivities and ability to focus - I’d love to point you in the right direction.

WINTER WELLNESS BLEND

This is another of my current favourite diffuser blends featuring Siberian Fir - I call this one ‘Change of Season Wellness Blend’ 🍃🍂

The weather in Melbourne is sooo erratic, I’m still getting used to checking my weather app multiple times a day to ensure where all dressed accordingly. And now that we’re in Autumn, you’d think it’d be consistently cooler? No, we’ve gone from 40 degrees to 20 degrees back to 30 degrees in the last few weeks. ☔️❄️☀️

I always find that crazy change in temperatures often bring on cold and flu symptoms so I’ve been diffusing this blend quite regularly. Easy Air and On Guard are two go-to oils for protecting against seasonal threats and boosting overall wellness but Siberian Fir also has similar properties.

I’ve been loving the combination of Siberian Fir and Easy Air and then adding a drop of On Guard for good measure. It’s what I imagine the smell of clear crisp mountain air during the festive season would be like.

SIBERIAN FIR - MY LATEST OBSESSION

Ages ago I purchased a bottle of Siberian Fir to use in a Teething Blend for Hallie ( which was really effective ) but I then kind of forgot about it.

When it popped up during the BOGO promotions I was a little disappointed, thinking ‘oh I’ve already got a nearly full bottle of that’. But it inspired me to get it out again and have a smell. And for some reason, I became instantly obsessed. I’ve been using it in my diffuser as much as possible and particularly love it with combined with Balance.

I also consulted my Modern Essentials book and Emotions & Essentials Oils book to read up on the properties of Siberian Fir:

“Siberian Fir may be beneficial for reducing aches / pains from colds and flu, fighting airborne germs / bacteria... plus so much more.’’

‘’It creates a feeling of grounding, anchoring and empowerment. It can stimulate the mind while allowing the body to relax’.’

“Siberian Fir helps ease difficult transitions by encouraging individuals to focus on finding meaning and purpose with each new chapter.”

I find it so interesting when a certain oil jumps out at you and then you can dig deeper and look into the emotional and energetic properties and how they generally are freakishly applicable to you at that point in time.

DIY REED DIFFUSERS

DIY reed diffusers are a great way to Diffuser your essential oils in smaller rooms without having to use an ultrasonic diffuser.

I made up these three for our laundry, toilet and bathroom.

Plus it’s a great way to reuse your empty essential oil bottles.

I scanned through Pinterest looking for a recipe but there were honestly so many variations. I just went with the following:

1/2 full of fractionated coconut oil
1/2 full of Vodka
20 drops of doTERRA’s Purify - The Refreshing Blend
10 drops of doTERRA Lemongrass
4 bamboo skewers in each.

I choose these oils for their cleansing and odor neutralizing abilities and they both smell so fresh and clean.

You can use any of your favourite aromas. It’s a great way to use the last drops that are always hard to get out.

Do you have a DIY reed diffuser recipe? I’ll see how this concoction goes 😆

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Happy New Year!

We’re back in Melbourne after a week long holiday to our hometown of Brisbane. We stayed at Southbank and the girls loved the beach and kids splash area. I grew up with visits to Southbank, then went to university at a campus right in Southbank and then went on to spend my years fresher out of uni working around West End. So it was interested to see Southbank from the perspective of a tourist; it’s really great for families!

But the main point of this post was to share one way in which I used my oils to keep us healthy on the trip, because two of the top places you’re most likely to pick up germs would have to be public swimming pools and airplanes... both were a key part of our trip.

Each night I rolled diluted On Guard down the girls backs and on the back of my neck. It’s the doTERRA’s Protective Blend and contains Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary and Eucalyptus which are known for their antibacterial properties.

The On Guard Hand Sanitizing Spray is also super handy when out and about!

So far so good, we’ve all returned in good health!

21. PEPPERMINT FLAVOURED PROTEIN BALLS

I'm a terrible baker, I honestly ruin anything I attempt to bake. I love these no-bake chia and cacao protein ball recipes but I've even managed to stuff them up on occasions. 🤨😆 I've tried making protein balls from scratch but ruined the blades of our nutri-bullet trying to blend up almonds 🤦‍♀️I'm seriously that bad in the kitchen.

Protein Balls make for a quick, easy, healthy snack and taste amazing with a few drop of doTERRA's Peppermint essential oil. You can even convince a toddler that they are chocolate 😄

doTERRA essentials oils are the highest quality 100% pure plant extracts, which makes them safe natural food flavouring. The range includes herbs and spices like Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Cinnamon, Basil and Coriander to name a few. I'm definitely not a masterchef but I know a lot of people do love cooking with their doTERRA essential oils. But take my word for it - a little goes a long way!

20. EMOTIONS & ESSENTIAL OILS

I've always been drawn to Cedarwood, it's just always jumped out to me. I actually received it as a free enrolment incentive product when I got started with my first order, so it kind of just came to me. It's warm, rich, woody smell reminds me of campfires and is very comforting. So when I discovered that Cedarwood is the Oil of Community, it was kind of spooky just how appropriate it was to my emotional needs.

Emotionally, Cedarwood helps to promote a sense of connectedness, feelings of belonging and feeling of social bonds. This has been all very relevant since moving from Brisbane to Sydney. We left behind our friends, family and social network - our community - in Brisbane. I've been really conscious about establishing friendships and social bonds within our Sydney community. It's been a very enlightening experience and is kind of fascinating how Cedarwood ties into it all.

This is one of my favourite blends to diffuse during the day:

  • Balance: The Oil of Grounding

  • Cedarwood: The Oil of Community

  • Bergamot: The Oil of Self Acceptance

19. D.I.Y BODY WASH

Once you start looking into just what ingredients and chemicals are actually in a lot of our personal hygiene products - it can get a little overwhelming and a bit scary.

But the good news is it is easy to create your own natural alternatives. Its very empowering to know exactly what you are using on your body.

This is a really simple recipe for body wash:

  • 3/4 Unscented Castile Soap

  • 1/4 Aloe Vera Juice

  • 2 x tablespoons of Vitamin E Oil

  • 10 x drops of Cedarwood essential oil

  • 10 x drops of Lavender essential oil

  • 10 x drops of Tea Tree essential oil

Put them all into a glass soap dispenser and shake to combine.

You can customise this recipe with any of the essentials oils that work best to support skim. Lavender and Tea Tree have been my go to oils for skin, but Cedarwood also has properties that promote healthy skin.

If you have any questions about how to get started with the doTERRA DIY low-tox lifestyle, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I'd love to share my knowledge and point you in the right direction.

18. MODERN ESSENTIALS

A great resource to refer to when using essential oils to support your overall health and wellness is the book MODERN ESSENTIALS. It's basically an encyclopedia listing all way to apply essential oils to support various areas of concern. It also come an a handy app format.

This is a blend I created after referring to Modern Essentials when I woke up with some tension in my neck and head. I was very surprised at how effective it was and now reach for this blend straight away when the same symptoms arise.

In a 5ml Roller:
5 drops of Peppermint
5 drops of Eucalyptus
5 drops of Frankincense
Topped up with Fractionated Coconut Oil

Photo 18-8-18, 8 55 17 pm.png

17. MUSCLE MASSAGE

doTERRA's Ice Blue - Athletic blend make for the perfect massage oil.

Quite often I've combined a few drops of Ice Blue with fractionated coconut oil and massaged it into Braino's shoulders and back after a big week at work.

It's great for supporting aches and tension. And who doesn't love a back massage!

16. PURE - FUME & EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

Since I had Farley, I've stopped wearing perfume. Baby-wearing as been a big part of motherhood for me, I just love having my babies close in slings, wraps and the ergo carrier. And it just didn't feel right to have them so close to the harsh fragrances of perfume. Don't get me wrong, I still wear deodorant 😆 but I've really phased out all perfumes.

So I was really excited to discover doTERRA's beautiful Touch rollers that have been pre-diluted with blends of essential oils and fractionated coconut oil so you can apply them topically to your skin.

The blends have a variety of gorgeous scents and have also been created with emotional support in mind. The Emotional Aromatherapy Touch Kit includes blend likes Console, Forgive, Peace, Cheer, Motivate and Passion.

I particularly love this blend HOPE; a blend of Frankinscene, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang and Vanilla Bean Absolute. This blend is extra special as doTERRA have pledged the full sale price of each bottle of Hope to the charity Operation Underground Railroad which works toward rescuing and rehabilitating children from sex trafficking. A very heavy topic to think about but such an incredible cause to support.

This is one of the main reasons I love doTERRA as a company. They give back to so many amazing charities through their Healing Hand Foundation.

One bottle of HOPE is an incredible way to support yourself naturally and support an incredible important cause.

15. BRAINO'S BED TIME BLEND

For someone who was a little skeptical at first, Braino has grown to appreciate these oils!

He’s not the biggest fan of good old Lavender so I created this particular blend to diffuse at night. The woody, earthy aromas of Cedarwood and Vetiver seemed suitably masculine while Bergamot is a delicious soft citrus scent. When it comes to relaxation, you can’t go past Vetiver, while Cedarwood and Bergamot area also very calming and soothing to the senses.

Braino was actually pretty surprised at how quickly he drifted off to sleep with this diffusing in the room and now, almost obsessively, makes sure the diffuser is running each night.

I've you've been thinking of getting doTERRA into your life, I'd love to show you the most cost effective way to grow your collection.

14. CALM AND COLLECTED BLEND V.2

This is another take on my morning diffuser blend.

I absolutely love Balance - it’s a must have in our household, I’ll mix it with anything! Citrus oils make the perfect combo to start the day with as they are very energising and uplifting. Citrus Bliss is doTERRAs Invigorating Blend and it smells delicious!

Photo 18-8-18, 11 32 38 pm.jpg

13. BABY CHEST RUB

Another low - tox alternative for our little ones; this chest rub is the perfect respiratory support.

It’s just organic coconut oil with 10 drops of doTERRA’s Easy Air Blend. I rub this on the girls chest at night when they need a little help with deep, clear breathing. So gentle, natural and easy to make!

Photo 18-8-18, 8 57 57 pm.jpg

12. EMOTIONS, INTUITION & ESSENTIALS OILS

I’ve now gotten into the habit of turning the diffuser on as part of my morning routine. I find its a nice way to check in with myself and set my intentions for the day. Now that I have a growing collection of oils, I like to see which oils I intuitively gravitate towards. If you like a little bit of spirituality, each oil is considered to serve and support a different aspect of our emotion wellbeing, so it’s a fascinating way to tune into your own emotions. I’ve never really been that into things like tarot cards, crystals or astrology (yet 😆) but I do love investigating the connection between the oils and my emotional needs.

For example, this is a blend that I kind of selected at random based on what jumped out at me and what I know to smell appealing.

Grapefruit is the Oil of Honoring the Body and promotes respect for the body, meeting physical needs and body-acceptance.

Patchouli is the Oil of Physicality and incorporates the positive properties of confidence, body connection and acceptance.

Balance - the Grounding Blend is the oil of Grounding and is associated with the positive aspects of being connected and inner strength.

I must have been needing a bit of a boost in the ‘self love’ department.

A great resource for diving deep into the connection between emotions and essential oils is the book - Emotions and Essential Oils. It's truly fascinating stuff.

11. DIY FOAMING HAND WASH

I have gone a little crazy with replacing a lot of our cleaning and hygiene products around the house, but it’s so easy, once I started I couldn’t stop! Plus it's much better for the environment and saves a bit off the household budget too.

For this foaming hand wash, you’ll need:

  • an amber glass bottle with pump action nozzle

  • fill 1 / 3 with unscented castile soap

  • fill the rest with water

  • 10 x drops of On Guard essential oil

  • 5 x drops of Lemon essential oil

Darker glass bottles are much better for essential oils as they keep out sunlight which will deteriorate the aromatic and therapeutic properties of your oils. I keep this one on the window sill so the dark glass is a must!

Also, essential oils can corrode plastics so glass is always the best option.

Photo 18-8-18, 8 58 32 pm.png

10. FRANKINCENSE

Let talk about Frankincense for a bit here… this oil is historically one of the most precious oils and has so many benefits - it’s incredible. It’s one of the oils that is superb for your skin; it’s revitalising and can help reduce the appearance of imperfections. When used aromatically, it promotes feelings of peace and relaxation.

I now use this Frankincense Touch roller around my eyes each night as a natural toner (Mum life have got me like…👵 )

And I often reach for Frankincense when I’m feeling a little crazy - a few deep breaths of Frankincense from the bottle does the trick.

Photo 18-8-18, 9 00 32 pm.png

9. BABY WIPES

This is another brilliant low-tox baby product replacement. They are so easy to make, cheaper than most store bought wipes and super gentle on your little ones skin.

I’ve always been a cloth nappy enthusiasts but Farley often developed scary looking nappy rashes. It was hard to pint point exactly what caused the flare ups but by the time she was 12 months I converted to disposable nappies. However, for Hallie, I’ve gone back to cloth nappies and have also been using the handmade baby wipes and her nappy area as been rash free!

HOW TO MAKE:

I combine about 400ml of cooled, boiled water with 2 tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil and 2 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 3 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil.
I sit a roll of paper towel in the mixture and let it absorb.
Once the paper towel has absorbed everything, I remove the cardboard role out of the middle - once it’s soggy it slides right out.
I then pull out the end of the paper towel from the middle of the roll.
And then squash it into this tall glass jar
(you can use any container that is convenient to you, I just found this one at the back of the cupboard, it was roughly the same size as a paper towel and it’s worked ever since)

Even if you don’t have babies - these wipes are heaven when you’ve got a cold and are continuously blowing and wiping your nose. Perfect with a bit of Eucalyptus Essential Oil)

Lavender and Tea Tree are very versatile and affordable oils. I now included them in my monthly Loyalty Rewards Program order which is a great way to purchase your oils and accumulate rewards points to redeem for further products. Let me know if you'd like more info!

8. BABY LOTION

As I’ve mentioned, our family has pretty dry skin. Braino deals with pretty extreme eczema and I have dry skin myself. Thankfully, our girls haven't had any major eczema flair ups, but their skin does need a lot of extra hydration. I’ve always been conscious of what creams I use on their skins but I was surprised by how easy it is to make your own totally natural baby lotion.

This is just organic coconut oil, melted over the stove.
Then once it cooled, but was still liquid, add 4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 4 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil.
Then just store in the fridge so it solidifies again.

Tea Tree contains cleansing and antibacterial properties while Lavender is very soothing and cleansing to the skin also. Both oils are very gentle - perfect for fresh bubbas and free from any synthetical nasties.
